Another story sale

I’m happy to announce my story “Copy Machine” will be appearing at Flash Fiction Online.

It’s a little strange to say, but I *really* like this story. I mean, I like all of my stories, but every once in awhile I write one that I’m particularly pleased with, and this is one of them.

April was a *crazy* month in terms of writing. I had 3 acceptances, not to mention the play performance. Keep in mind that 3 acceptances is the most I’ve ever had in an entire year, and now here are 3 in one month. Add that to my upcoming reading, and I’m almost starting to feel like a real author!

All right May, the bar is set high; let’s see if you can top it.

“My Heart” in its theatrical debut

Just a friendly reminder: an adaptation of my story “My Heart is a Quadratic Equation” will be featured as part of the Pulp Stage’s upcoming Sci Fi Night show next Thursday, April 24th.

More details are available here, but if you happen to be out Portland way, be sure to stop in at the Jack London Bar and check it out. Tickets are only $5 if you buy them online!

Shape of: “My Heart is a Quadratic Equation”, Form of: Live Theater

I have some very exciting news to announce! Matt Haynes from The Pulp Stage has adapted my story “My Heart is a Quadratic Equation” for the theater.

Matt emailed me out of the blue after hearing my story on Escape Pod. I probably would have just figured Matt was a Nigerian prince or something (I mean, come on. “We want to adapt your story for theater. Just send along your credit card information to cover the costs…”, right?), except he had just done a guest narration over on Toasted Cake, so I had actually heard of him just before he contacted me.

I can’t tell you how thrilled I am about this whole thing. So I’ve been published online, via email, in print, in audio, and now I can add live action to the list. It’s been a whirlwind to say the least.

I’m not sure about when they will actually be performing the play, but of course I will keep you posted. Unfortunately, the company is in Portland, which is a little far for me to go and see it. Not sure if I have any Portlandian readers, but if anybody is out that way, please go and report back! I’d love to hear how it went!

Downsizing Pluto, now in audio!

An audio “reprint” of my story “Downsizing Pluto” is now live at the Cast of Wonders podcast. This story previously appeared in Daily Science Fiction. My story is a part of a “tiny wonders” episode that includes 2 other very short (and very excellent) stories. I recommend you listen to the whole thing, but if not, my story is 3rd and starts at about the 16 minute mark.

There is something so amazing about hearing one of my stories in audio. So far I’ve been gifted with amazing narrators. I was giggling the whole time about the professional, serious, news reporter voice of Bob Eccles contrasted with the silliness of the story. I don’t know if I’ll ever get to the point where I stop going, “This awesome voice reading my silly story?”

Cast of Wonders is a “weekly YA fiction podcast featuring a wide range of stories of the fantastic.” As far as I know, it’s the only young adult speculative fiction podcast. As a parent, I think it’s a great idea to have stories that are pre-screened for content to be age appropriate. And I have always specifically thought that this story was a good fit for YA, so I’m glad that they agreed!

Anyway, Cast of Wonders is consistently one of the best produced audio fiction podcasts, and one that I have listened to many times before being published there. If this story piques your interest and you’d like to listen to more, I recommend starting with the “Best of Cast of Wonders” list put together by Diabolical Plots.

“My Heart” in Your Ears

I am very pleased to announce that “My Heart is a Quadratic Equation” has been picked up by the science fiction audio magazine Escape Pod.

I doubt seeing your stories in print would ever get old, but I have to say that the idea of someone actually performing my story leaves me feeling all tingly inside.

As some of you know, I get my fiction almost exclusively through audio, and in fact Escape Pod was the first audio short fiction podcast I ever listened to. Since then, I have listened to many, many episodes of Escape Pod, and in fact I even blogged about them (including a few of my favorite episodes) way back in June of 2011. Although there are dozens of really excellent audio fiction magazines I could recommend, the Escape Artist’s podcasts (Escape Pod for science fiction, Podcastle for Fantasy, and Pseudopod for horror) really are the industry standard for story selection, production value, and just generally putting out a quality product. Needless to say, I am thrilled.

As usual, I will keep you posted when the story is available.
