Baby’s first movie

Over the weekend we took Evie to the Museum of Science and Industry and she had a blast. She loved seeing the trains and the chicks hatching. She learned a new train word, caboose, or as she likes to put it “kaboom!” But of course, being a little kid, she enjoyed other things such as walking up the stairs just as much as the actual exhibits. When recounting all the best parts of the day, she always made sure to include “Red stairs!” in the list. Unfortunately the children’s area was closed for renovation, but on the other hand had it been open I’m sure we wouldn’t have been allowed to leave.  All in all a highlight of the weekend and a great way to spend a rainy day.

While we were there, we saw “Wild Ocean” on the Omnimax. Perhaps it was a bit overwhelming as a first movie experience, but I think Evie liked it overall.

It certainly delivered on the promise of “fishies and sharks” (although not too many sharks actually). She was actually more into the above water scenes, recounting for me her memories of the “people dancing and singing” and “high place, high up place” for some of the (I assume) helicopter shots. I think she was a little scared during some of the underwater scenes and repeatedly called for them to “turn the light!” We assumed we would only stay for a few minutes before she got too antsy and we had to leave, but she was really good. Several times I thought she was asleep, only to look over and see her staring at the screen enraptured, with a forgotten cookie clenched in her fist. Eventually she did fall asleep, but I think she watched at least 30 minutes. She even applauded during a few scenes. I’m sure she would have liked to stay awake, but it was well past her usual nap time.

So I think it is a safe bet that she enjoyed it and I’m sure she would thank her grandma and grandpa for the money for the family pass if she had any sort of concept of money and stuff. We will certainly be back.

Over Easy

Last Sunday we went out for breakfast at the Over Easy Cafe on the North side.

Soooo good!  It was a little on the pricey side for breakfast, but well worth it in my opinion.  We had a pesto omelet and banana french toast, both of which were superb.  I even ordered coffee for the first time in my life (don’t think I’m too adult, I tried to order chocolate milk first but they didn’t have it).  It is a little out of our way, but Lake Shore Drive on a Sunday morning is an extremely pleasant drive, with the lack of traffic, the beautiful lake on the right and the picture perfect Chicago skyline in front of you. Over Easy was kid friendly too; almost everybody there had at least one and the wait staff were all waiving to Evie and complementing her on her outfit.  I’m sure in the summer there is probably a decent wait and parking might be more of a problem, but worth the wait.

There were literally a dozen more things that sounded good on the menu, so we will probably be back.

Chicago Zombie

Well the first item in zombie news today, Michael Jackson’s Thriller is going to be turned into a musical.  I think this is great news!  It has all the elements of a good musical; great music, neat costumes, elaborate dance sequences.  Plus, anything that allows me to hear Thriller more is a plus.

So, the other day I happened upon a website that seemed right up my alley: Chicago Zombie.  The have all sorts of zombie news, Chicago zombie get togethers, etc. such a pub crawls where everybody dresses up like a zombie.  Brilliant!

And then my zombie news went weirdly circular when MegDesk posteda zombie themed post which mentioned  Død Sno, a zombie / Nazi movie which is Norway’s entrant into the Sundance Film Festival.  Well, I saw a preview for said movie on Chicago Zombie, and I must say it looks even more awesome than I could have imagined:

Finally, Meg also sent me a link the other day on how to hack those flashing message street signs.  Of course, what more important message could you possibly send other than:

Well, it looks like someone took them up on their instructions, since I saw this today, out of Austin Texas.  Their messages were things like “Caution! Zombies Ahead!” which I like and “Zombies in Area! Run!” which I don’t like because to me it is funnier when it is phrased the way those street signs are usually phrased.  And “Nazi Zombies Ahead!” doesn’t even make sense, other than to make this post even more weirdly inter-related.

But hey, I’m not out committing crimes for zombie related jokes, so who am I to judge?

Happy Birthday to Me

And I am gracious enough to share my birthday with several lesser known celebrities:

And a couple of people not quite as smart as me:

For my birthday we went over to Dixie Kitchen.  I mentioned that we have tried to go there several times but it was always too busy, so we went elsewhere.  So we figured we better get in there before the episode aired, or else we’d never have a chance.

The food was really good, well worth a birthday meal.  They give you complimentary johnny cakes on your table, which was unique and they were pretty good.  We had fried green tomatoes as an appetizer and I was really impressed with them. I don’t think I have ever had them and these were just perfect.  Slightly spicy.  I thought they would have some sort of sauce, but they didn’t.  The cornbread muffins were really good too.  They actually had little pieces of jalapeno in them.  I knew it was a southern place but I didn’t know it was a specifically a Nawlins place.  I had catfish, mashed potatoes and red beans and rice and Sara had blackened chicken, mashed sweet potatoes and greens.  I thought it was better than Calypso, but Sara said she still prefers Calypso.  Oh, and did I mention it was pretty cheap?  Anyway, Mr. Obama has good taste and I will definitely be back some time!

Barack on Check Please

For those of you who aren’t in the know, Check Please is a fairly popular PBS show that reviews local restaurants around Chicago.  It is actually a pretty good place to find out about interesting restaurants, and we have gone to several featured on there.  Basically, 3 guests come on and each recommends their favorite restaurants.  Before the show airs, each of the guests goes to the other guests’ favorites and then they all discuss them.  They intersperse these clips with interviews with the owners, etc.  The camera men do an amazing job of making the food look delicious.

Well, it turns out they have a previously unaired episode in which Barack Obama was one of the guests.  The episode will be airing Friday January 16th @ 8 p.m.  Not surprisingly, he recommended a restaurant close to home that I have tried to go to several times, but it has been too busy.  We always end up going to the one next door, which is actually really good as well and owned by the same people.

Here is a clip to wet your appetite (get it?):
