Happy 1st Birthday!

Today’s the day, can you believe it? Our big boy is 1 year old.

As one always says in posts like this, a year sure goes fast! Oliver has grown up quite a bit in that time.

The words that he reliably says are “Nala” and “book”. He can sign “book”, “milk”, “more” and “all done”, though he is more likely to use his own modified signs for these things; “more” is usually hand clapping, banging a hand on his tray, or gesturing towards his mouth, and “all done” is usually just putting his hands on his head. We haven’t required him to do the signs as rigorously as we did with Evie, so this is probably our fault for not being quite as strict on that. (For example, letting him get away with just banging on the tray for more.)

He does some other “non-official” things as well. He gives hi fives, and he occasionally does “so big!” He loves to point to pictures and say, “Ba ba” which means picture in Oliver’s language. He will occasionally say “ba” for ball or “Ba be” for baby and point to the object in question.

He can crawl really, really fast, on his hands and knees now, as opposed to his long-time belly crawl. He pulls himself up to stand and cruises around furniture, etc. but no first steps yet. I would imagine those would come soon.

Physically, he has 5, going on 6 teeth. He has always been a pretty big boy in terms of percentiles of height and weight, but he never went through a really chubby looking phase. Evie looked chubbier than him, even though she didn’t weigh as much.

He eats pretty much anything you put in front of him. Even if he won’t, you can usually just offer him that thing later, and he’ll eat it. This is a big difference from Evie. Also, another big difference from Evie is that, pretty much the only thing he won’t eat is avocado, which remains one of Evie’s favorite things to this day.

Of course Oliver’s first year was dominated by the whole eczema thing. But that’s pretty much controlled now (by a lengthy, twice-a-day routine). I’m hoping that gets better in year 2, but it is certainly a lot better now than it had been.

So that’s pretty much it. Obviously a couple of paragraphs don’t properly represent the entirety of our smiling, pointing, shrieking, splashing, lovable book monster. But that’s the best I can do at the moment, so it will have to suffice.

After 36 years at General Motors, my dad is officially retired

For the first time in 36 years, my dad will not be punching a clock at the plant today.

36 years, man. I can’t imagine doing anything for 36 years, much less going to work for the same company that long.

I’m not sure it’s completely sunk in yet. Talking to him about it the other day, it kind of reminded me of talking to someone with post traumatic stress disorder. My dad also pointed out that, at one point or another, practically every member of his family has been connected to GM in some way, and he’s the last one left working there. There’s not much of his life that doesn’t completely revolve around that place. I’m just not sure what he’ll do without it (without GM, but also without working in general).

As much as I can’t imagine doing something for 36 years, I especially can’t imagine giving it up after doing it for 36 years.

New Feature: First Friday Food

Last year around this time I asked if people wanted to see more features on the blog. Nobody said that they wanted to, but I’m adding one anyway.

On the first Friday of every month, I will try my hand at food blogging. Why? Well, because writing about food is fun. Sharing recipes is communal. And the pictures always look so dang beautiful.

Obviously this was brought about by the food blog guest post I did, which was a lot of fun. So I’ll be kicking us off with a repost of the original Pioneer Pumpkin Pancake post. Archives will be available here (once there are actual archives to see of course).

So, we’ll see where this takes us. I’m hoping that these will continue to be fun and not be too much of a burden. They are a lot more work-intensive than a typical blog post (due to the pictures and the fact that we actually have to make and document a recipe), which is why I’m going to go with one a month. Maybe it will encourage us to try new recipes. Maybe it will just be a convenient place to store good recipes we like. Maybe it will just show off some of Sara’s photography. We’ll see!

Help Meg blog her way to the North Pole!

A friend of mine, and frequent commenter on this blog, needs our help!

Meg of MegDesk.com (best known (on this blog at least) for being home to the annual Eurovision WTF awards) has joined a contest for bloggers to win a trip to the North Pole.

Meg’s post on why you should vote for her is really amazing, and you should definitely go read it (on your way to voting for her of course). The thing that makes it really amazing to me is that I know Meg, and I know that it is truly from her heart.

Meg enjoys travel the way I enjoy bacon. The way a Frenchman enjoys wine. The way zombies enjoy brains. She doesn’t just travel for simple sustenance, she rolls it around in her mouth and really tastes it. Enjoys it. She strides the globe like a colossus; a small town 4-H queen who went on to live in Paris, Beijing and Oslo. She’s awoken at sunrise to a roaring lion. SHE WAS AWOKEN AT DAWN, IN A TENT, BY A LION. And I know of nobody else in the world who so enjoys flags.

Meg deserves to go to the North Pole. She should stand on top of the world. No mere country can contain her. I don’t want to live in a world where someone like Meg can’t go to the North Pole.

The way the contest works is that the top 5 vote getters will go before a panel of experts who will select the winner. Meg is currently in 10th place. If all of the visitors who come to my blog today went and voted for Meg, she would easily jump to 6th place. And if you have facebook, you don’t even need to sign up for an account to vote for her: just go to her entry, click on the facebook icon, and allow the application.

So simple. Do it now. Vote for Meg. It will never be so easy to make someone’s dream come true. It’s the least you can do for me.

Cheap, Healthy and Oh-So-Good

Today I have a guest post over on Cheap, Healthy, Good about the “Pioneer Pumpkin Pancakes” that Evie and I usually make on Sundays. Well, I should say WE have a guest post, since the post is really made by Sara’s photography.

Welcome anybody who clicked over from Cheap, Healthy, Good! Take a look around, see if you like the place. Try not to rough it up too badly, you hooligans!

For my regular readers, go check out the post, and the blog. Enjoy our pancake recipe and any others you find. Chances are they are cheap, healthy and good!
