Blogging Challenge – 1 year down

In years past, my blogging as been spotty at best. Most years my posts were few and far between. I even took an entire year off from August 2004 – August 2005. Here are my totals through the years:

  • 2004 – 74 posts
  • 2005 – 57 posts
  • 2006 – 83 posts
  • 2007 – 91 posts
  • 2008 – 173 posts

So after averaging just over 75 posts a year, I jumped up quite a bit in 2008. At the beginning of 2009, I started blogging a lot. I thought to myself, “Self, do you think you could blog every day?” Honestly, I thought the answer was no. After a few minor adjustments (Sara convinced me to keep it to only week days), I gave it a shot. I was a little worried that I would run out of topics to talk about, and that I would end up making posts for the sake of posts, which would draw down the quality of the blog as a whole. Surely no one can come up with 5 good posts per week (I’ve at least proven that, if nothing else)!

So I started doing it just to do it and to see how long I could keep it going. I didn’t know how long it would last. Just when I was about to make up my mind on if I would really commit to doing it every day or not, here we are! A full year complete. I can’t believe how fast it went.

So 2009 ended with 309 blog posts, more than all the posts I made from 2004 – 2007 combined. There have been times when I just really had nothing else to say, and something occurred to me right at the last minute. Other times I have 10 posts half-written on the back burner, waiting to be polished up and put out. I even pre-scheduled posts over holidays (excepting the Christmas hiatus I just took).

So what sayest thou? Should I keep going at the same schedule? Any thing you’d like changed around here? More / less regular features? More / less posts? More delicious bacon ideas and zombie escape plans and less darling quotes from my daughter? (Just kidding on that last one, I’ve already heard aaaaall about it, believe me)

Answers go in the comments, and feel free to lavish me with extensive praise. I think it’s the least you can do for me, I like the attention (why else would I write 309 publicly viewable blog posts last year?)

  1. Shane,

  2. Shane – I obviously don’t read it for the bacon or zombie posts, but every once in a while between Evie stories, I do get a laugh out of something you’ve noticed somewhere. Of course, there hasn’t been one Evie post that wasn’t totally entertaining for this household. Honestly, I think if you can keep up this pace or anywhere near it, you will be more pleased with yourself someday than you can even imagine right now. But make sure you don’t burn yourself out so that it becomes a pain and you don’t even want to reach for the laptop. Just keep up the pace that feels right to you & don’t feel bad if you slack off here & there. It looks to me like there are a lot of people that will take whatever they can get! Thanks.

  3. Keep going! Blogging is not only therapeutic for you, but you’ve got to write all these things down sooner than later. We love the Evie updates – but you’ll probably be writing with a newborn in your lap in just a few months. You could write more about your awesome friends that live in Pittsburgh, though.

  4. I think Tom said it well. There is never too much about Evie, and I don’t always check out the links, but I read the bacon, zombie, and pirate postings, they usually make me smile. I also enjoy the random signs, websites, or overheard. You find very interesting things that I wouldn’t see otherwise. Thanks for the blog.

  5. More Bacon and Zombies! And now that we bring it up..did you know I had to actually go to improv everywhere to see what they were doing? Where were you on that?

    • Come on, I just had a post about them on Dec. 17th!

And as I mentioned in that post, I preferred their earlier, smaller stuff. I always check out their missions, but they’re usually so huge.

P.S. It just occurred to me the other day that you bought Evie a science kit for Christmas…still haven’t given up on the mad scientist thing, huh?

      • What? No way. She will be a mad scientist. I got her the expiriment thing just this year. If I push it on her to early then it will turn her off. Turning your niece into an scientist is a delicate process…

  6. Shane, I hope you continue to blog as you feel fit. I don’t read every blog but when I get the chance, I read several. They are very interesting and it would be wonderful to go back and let Evie read these! It’s like keeping a diary – so thank you for sharing 🙂

  7. I love reading your blog, Shane! I check it out almost every day and find it to be quite entertaining. It also keeps me up to date with the little things that you probably wouldn’t think to tell me. Although, I’m probably a little biased, I think you are a very skilled writer. I can’t believe you’ve been writing this since 2004, and I didn’t start reading it until just last year! I didn’t know what I was missing. If you’re looking for suggestions, I would say go with what you find to be entertaining. That way, it will keep you interested.

  8. Just a tip someone once told me. Create a draft post and write down random topics that might make good posts that you think of throughout the day or week. Also u could have a topic tuesday post where you ask people what they want to hear more about to keep them engaged and get topics all in one. Ps. I really lime the plugins you are using. I do a lot of business working with wordpress and I like the mobile plugin/theme and the comment checkboxs/replys. Hope all is well. Hit me up for some more tips or just to see how derek zoolander is doing. Pss. My blog is at baby.LeDonni.com. Following the progress of our twins soon to arrive.

    • I love that you signed this Blue Steel! 🙂

I do that with the draft posts. This is especially helpful to write down all the funny things Evie says in a week before I forget, and then whenever I get enough for a post, I spruce it up and post it, and then start another draft.

Twins!? Wow, that’s intense. Good luck with that! 🙂 I’ll check out the blog.
