Baby day(s)

So last Friday Sara had her first day back to work, which means I worked from home and took care of Evie.  Everything went pretty well, I managed to give her all her bottles and put her to sleep for all her naps.  It was nice to spend the day with her, but it is hard to get any work done!  I probably only worked 3 hours during the day.  In the future I think I will try to get some done Thursday night so I don’t have to do it over the weekend.  It was fine this weekend, but we are busy a lot of weekends.

This week I took vacation to push back Evie having to start at day care for one more week.  So I will have her today, tomorrow and Friday.  It is a little easier though when I’m not trying to work.  Well it is really easy today because so far she has only slept!  Sara is pretty sad about having to leave Evie at daycare.  We went to visit yesterday and there were a few babies crying the whole time.  We don’t want Evie to be crying the whole time! 😦

Also, Evie finally got too big for her bassinet.  We weren’t quite ready to banish her from our bedroom, so we moved her crib into our room.  This meant disassembling it because it couldn’t fit out the door.  Now our room is very crowded!!  You kind of have to squeeze everywhere or crawl over the end of the bed to get in!

Okay, this thing is crazy.  Do you see the lady spinning clockwise or counter-clockwise?

It seems like a stupid question, right?  Well if you see her turning clockwise, then you are right brained (creative, emotional, etc.) and if you see her turning counter-clockwise, you are left brained (logic, order, etc).  It seems crazy because how can someone see her turning a different way, but Sara and I each saw her turning a different way!!  So I guess it works.  If I concentrate I can see her turning either way, but naturally I see her turning counter-clockwise.  Sara can’t see her turning any way except clockwise.

I just thought that was interesting!

Marie Digby

So last Sunday morning Evie woke up with her first cold.  I felt sooo bad for her!  Imagine that you’ve never been sick before in your entire life, you just wouldn’t know what to think.  Why did my nose stop working?  What’s all this crap leaking out of my face?  She was pretty miserable.  In retrospect we were probably pushing it a little too much to hit up Wisconsin, Michigan and then Indiana 3 weekends in a row.  This also means that Evie wasn’t in a very good mood for our big magazine photo shoot Monday night.  More details on that in the future I’m sure.  So now I don’t know if I caught what Evie had or if I got it at the same time as she did but it took longer to get its hooks in me since I’m so much bigger than her.  But I’m pretty much a wreck at this point.

Okay, now for the title of this post.  So I’ve been hearing on the radio this version of Umbrella that was not by Rihanna, but instead was by someone named Marie (pronounced mar-ee-ay) Digby, whoever that was.  I kind of liked the version better than the original but I was kind of annoyed by it because I was like, “Isn’t there more than one song in the world?  Why would multiple people record exactly the same song?”  Well I happened across it today on YouTube.  Apparently this is a YouTube sensation, so if you spend more time on YouTube than I do, you’ve probably already heard of her.  It turns out she just has a bunch of videos uploaded that are just her singing and/or playing guitar/piano.  She has an awesome voice (and it doesn’t hurt that she is drop dead gorgeous) and there is a good mix of original songs and covers.  Anyway, it appears that her popularity on YouTube turned into radio air time, a guest shot on Last Call with Carson Daly and I think even resulted in her cover of Umbrella being played on The Hills.  There is something very appealing about how simple the videos are and it is an awesome story of just filming yourself in your living room and through the power of the Internet you get discovered.

She really is amazing and I recommend you check her out.  Here’s the original video:

So the UAW walked off the line at 11:00 a.m. Eastern time this morning.  It sounds like it will be a relatively short strike.  My dad doesn’t have picket duty until 12 – 4 a.m. on Saturday, so he’s got some free time on his hands!  He doesn’t seem to be too worried about things, but I am a little worried for him (and Michigan’s economy!).  GM isn’t doing all that well and my dad isn’t really willing to give up anything, especially wages.  That’s the sort of thing that leads to a stalemate.  I don’t know how to feel about the whole thing…on one hand the company is struggling with competition from foreign automakers on top of struggling with how to pay for pensions for all the retiring baby boomers, so it seems like something’s got to give there.  On the other hand, corporate CEOs (everywhere, not just at GM) are making so much silly money that it is kind of hard to feel bad for them.  Either way, we hope for a swift end to the strike so the 72,000+ workers can get back to being paid!

Not much going on here, we bought a new dining room table that is enormous.  That is all.

Our Big Day

We had a big day today!  We went shopping at several places and out to lunch.  We had our first public diaper changing (in the backseat of the car no less) and our first public feeding.  Sara bought like 8 shirts, we got about 4 new outfits for Evie and we got like one metric ton of new books for her.  We were gone for about 5 hours and she did great until right at the end.  It was definitely the longest foray with the baby and I think we get a little more confident every time we go out.  Plus I think Sara likes to get out of the house.

Not much else planned for the weekend, other than watching the Packer’s home opener tomorrow.

In completely unrelated news, that Fillipino prison full of dancing prisoners is definitely not a hoax.  I wasn’t sure if they were really prisoners or not, but it turns out they are.  And they are forced to dance!  But they like it.

New Developments

So Evie had her one month check up today.  Remember how the doctor was worried about her weight and we had to take her in for a weight check?  Yeah, doesn’t seem to be a problem now!  She went from 7 lbs. 0 oz. to 10 lbs. 1 oz. in a month!!  I don’t want to call her a little piggy (I’m no Alec Baldwin) but that is pretty impressive!

And speaking of eating, I gave her her first bottle tonight.  It took two tries (not too bad from what I hear) but after that she took to it like a duck to water.  But then again, after the previous paragraph, maybe that is not too surprising!  So looks like mommy doesn’t have to worry when it is time to go back to work!

Lots of visitors this weekend, but we didn’t really do anything.  The weather was really nice, but we only really got out once for a walk.  I did manage to grill out about 3 times, so that was good.

Just as a side note, there is now a billboard for TMZ.com on my way to work.  Doesn’t it seem weird that a website is advertising on a billboard?  I should climb up there and try to double click it.

Okay, okay, enough with the small talk…make with the ha ha’s!

I’d like to address this one right away.  It is a “gourmet” candy bar that consists of a bacon center surrounded by chocolate.  Got Book wants to know if my love of bacon overcomes my general disgust of mixing sweet and salty things?  The answer is no, absolutely not!  I think that question has been asked and answered with the bacon snack bars and the bacon caramel.  Why would I want bacon and chocolate mixed when I could have bacon and chocolate separate?  I do not even like to get syrup on my bacon or sausage!

Now, I think this is an ingenious idea!  It is an alarm clock and when it goes off it runs away from you!  Then it randomly changes direction, so by the time you catch it you are awake.  Watch the video to see it in action.  It will even jump off your nightstand!

Now finally, this isn’t exactly a game, but I was curious the other day how fast I could type.  You, dear reader, should try this out and tell me if it seems accurate to you.  I was typing on the Wizard of Oz text.  I messed up some at the end so I think I could do better, but I guess I did pretty good.  I don’t really know what the average typer types?
