What is it about old school simple games that are so much more enthralling than newer, much more complicated games? I can play a scrolling-spaceship-shooter like this for hours.
Get the homing missiles and the purple gun and you’re unstoppable.

My dad took a job where he has to use the computer at work. It’s like a supervisor position and he has to do time entry and OT approval…that kind of stuff. I’m really proud of him for taking a job like that. I honestly can’t believe he accepted the job, or even that it would be offered to him. I know he was trying to weasel out of the computer part but they told him if he wanted the supervisor job he had to take all of it or none of it.
The reason why I’m so proud of him is because normally he goes to great lengths to make sure he’s not in a position where he would have to read something. He’s worked most of his life to hide or play down his disability. (And he’s amazing at it. I guarantee people who have known him for years have no idea he can’t read. I don’t even know how I’d make it in the world, much less do all the stuff he does.) Taking a job where he knows its going to require reading is a pretty big step for him. I really really hope it works out.
There is a door in my building that goes down to the basement. It has a lock on it, but none of the people living here have a key to it. For some reason, someone locked it from the inside, went out the basement back door, came around and back in the front door and then broke a key off in the lock. Can anyone explain that to me?? Why would someone do that?? So, because our keys have never worked in the back basement door (even though they are supposed to) I couldn’t get to our washer and dryer in the basement. Eventually the landlord came and took care of it. It wasn’t that big of a deal, but I’m just so confused about it. There are only 4 apartments in my building, so it’s not like it could have been just anyone.

So last weekend we flew to Chicago to attend Sara’s old college roommate Amy’s wedding. The wedding was on Sat. but we took Thur. and Fri. off so we could spend some vacation time in the Windy City. And why go to Chicago if you’re not going to experience some authentic Chicago weather? It was like 50 and rainy the whole time we were there.
Thur. night we stayed with Dabu and went to dinner with MY old college roommate Chad and our friend Mike D (not of Beastie Boys fame). We went to some tapas place, and it was really good.
Friday we went to the field museum in the morning and we got soaked on the way there. I love the field museum because I absolutely LOVE dioramas!! Seriously! Sara hates them though (why?), so I don’t think she enjoyed it as much as I did. We also saw the stuffed cadavers of the lions from the Ghost in the Darkness and Sue the T-Rex. That’s a good museum.
After the museum we met up with our friends Alexis and Gregory and picked up our stuff from Dabu’s and then we ate at some Mexican place that had good margaritas and then we went to see Second City. It’s a really good sketch comedy group in Chicago. It was really funny and probably the highlight of the trip. Oh, also on Friday, we got some bad directions from Dabu and had to walk like 10 extra blocks in the freezing rain trying to find a Swatch store. That was probably the low point of the trip.
The wedding was nice and all, but we hardly got to see Amy at all. Not much else to report. It was a pretty good trip all in all.
Also, I usually fly US Air, but let me tell you, on the way back we flew I think American Air and it was the best plane ride I ever had!! Not only did we have twice as much leg room, they gave us Tostitos instead of pretzels. I hate pretzels.
You’re not going to want to miss this…
“A new hip-hop feud is brewing that glamorizes not guns and ‘hos but Java and secure encryption algorithms.
While gangsta rap is seen as celebrating the violence and aggression that claimed two of its brightest stars, “geeksta” rap is a hip-hop genre celebrating coding skills and school grades.”
And how did I know that Purdue was going to figure into that somehow?
By the way, you absolutely don’t want to miss the lyrics to “So Much Drama in the PhD” including such brutal attacks as:
“Your mom circulates like a public key,
Servicing more requests than HTTP.
She keeps all her ports open like Windows ME”
and
“What’s wrong MC Plus Plus, am I making you nervous?
Even skanky fat hoes give you denial of service.”
That’s right, MC Plus Plus.
