Push Button, Receive Bacon

I guess I don’t look at the instructions on the hand dryer very much (because I pretty much know how they work), but now that they point it out the little heat lines coming out do look like bacon.

Either that, or this is a new awesome machine that dispenses bacon.

Now that is one sweet shirt

I could tell you about how awesome this shirt is, but I think the image speaks for itself:

The howling wolves? The moon? If this isn’t one of the sweetest shirts on the planet, I don’t know what is. But don’t take my word for it, make sure you go read the comments. It is well worth the effort, believe me. I will give you a taste, to wet your whistle:

This item has wolves on it which makes it intrinsically sweet and worth 5 stars by itself, but once I tried it on, that’s when the magic happened. After checking to ensure that the shirt would properly cover my girth, I walked from my trailer to Wal-mart with the shirt on and was immediately approached by women. The women knew from the wolves on my shirt that I, like a wolf, am a mysterious loner who knows how to ‘howl at the moon’ from time to time (if you catch my drift!). The women that approached me wanted to know if I would be their boyfriend and/or give them money for something they called mehth. I told them no, because they didn’t have enough teeth, and frankly a man with a wolf-shirt shouldn’t settle for the first thing that comes to him.

I arrived at Wal-mart, mounted my courtesy-scooter (walking is such a drag!) sitting side saddle so that my wolves would show. While I was browsing tube socks, I could hear aroused asthmatic breathing behind me. I turned around to see a slightly sweaty dream in sweatpants and flip-flops standing there. She told me she liked the wolves on my shirt, I told her I wanted to howl at her moon. She offered me a swig from her mountain dew, and I drove my scooter, with her shuffling along side out the door and into the rest of our lives. Thank you wolf shirt.

Pros: Fits my girthy frame, has wolves on it, attracts women
Cons: Only 3 wolves (could probably use a few more on the ‘guns’), cannot see wolves when sitting with arms crossed, wolves would have been better if they glowed in the dark.

You also might take a look at the “related items”, for example, I think the zubaz are a nice touch and would really set off the look.

For more of the same, you can check out the listing for Tuscan Whole Milk, 1 Gallon, 128 fl oz. This is teaching me a lot about the whole counter-culture of funny Amazon reviews…

Failure to Launch

I read a pretty good article the other day about companies that didn’t really go anywhere, didn’t live up to expectations. These weren’t just tiny little operations though, these were companies that were either A) on the top of their game, huge companies that just fizzled for some reason, or B) companies that had great technology or so much hype that they seemed like sure-fire winners. You will have heard of all of these products and that’s what made it interesting to me.

The first product that came to mind was the Segway. I remember when that came out, they had quotes from people claiming it would revolutionize the world, it was the death of cars, etc. etc. From big names too. And what happened? Do you know anybody who has one? (aside from the Chicago police of course) Sure enough, it was #1 on the list.

Unfortunately, we don’t know why some of these companies failed, but the article tries to at least guess what happened. Anyway, I thought it was an interesting read.

Certified Cheesemaker

I don’t remember if I mentioned it on here before or not, but Sara’s awesome Christmas present to my brother and I was a gift certificate to a cheese making class, run by Angelic Organics, and the class took place over the weekend.  It was really cool!

The class was set up brilliantly. We made 6 kinds of cheeses total, all of which were varieties that didn’t need to be aged very long, so we were able to try all of them. They had each group take one kind of cheese to be responsible for, we had ricotta, but it was timed out so that different cheeses had interesting steps at different times, so we could all gather around to see. Also, the different cheeses were timed out so that they all finished at different times, so we could try them as they were finished.

The cheeses made were mozzarellaricotta, queso blanco, chevre, feta, and formaggio. The mozzarella was unbelievably delicious, but complicated. I’d say our ricotta was the second best, followed by the queso blanco. The other ones were all good, but they were a little bland. In some cases this is because we didn’t add any flavoring and didn’t let them sit for as long as you normally would. Most of them were made with fresh goats milk, but a few were with cow’s milk. As part of the class, we even got to milk goats!

Nate and I ended up with ricotta because we didn’t care much about what kind we made. It turned out that it was the easiest to make, and the quickest. Despite that, we manged to make a huge mess when ours boiled over, and then later forgot that it had boiled over and used that burner again, causing a small fire. Just a smidge embarrassing. I’m sure everybody was like, “Oh of course, you invite guys to a cooking class, they mess everything up.” On the other hand, everybody liked our cheese. We made one without salt, one with, and one with some herbs like green onions and garlic. That one was the best and it went pretty fast.

The whole point of the class is to enable you to make cheese at home. So they gave us some recipes and pointers and stuff to take home. I don’t think I will ever make cheese at home, but I am content in the knowledge that I could if I had to. And as far as Christmas presents go, I have a little saying, it goes like this: if you give a man some cheese, he has cheese for a day. If you teach a man to make cheese, he will have cheese for a lifetime.

This is what I invented the category for

Evie says so many funny things that, even though I try to write them down, there are still a million that I forget. Anyway, here are a few from the weekend.

“Do you like to help your mommy?”

“Yes.”
“What do you help your mommy with?”
“Daddy!”

Evie kept saying something about “eating letters” but we didn’t know what she meant. She said she had eaten an orange one and a green one and we eventually realized another girl had shared 2 M&Ms with her in those colors.

Sara to me: “Should we go to the G-A-R-D-E-N?”
Evie: “I want to go to the G-A-R-N-F!”

Evie wanted to touch Nala, but I told her not to because Nala was sleeping. So instead, she said she was going to touch daddy. Then she said, “Nala is jealous. Very jealous.”

Evie was helping Sara in the garden with a child-sized watering can. Sara looked over and saw Evie dumping the water all overherself, mostly down her back. “What are you doing?” asked Sara and Evie replied, “Watering myself!”

As many of you know, I have a very large extended family and they do many things together. My mom is one of 17 kids. One of the traditions is the annual rummage sale in the spring, which happened over the last weekend. Almost everybody in the family contributes and the result is the largest rummage sale I’ve ever seen. Everything is dirt cheap and many of the items are bought by other family members before the sale really even begins. You want to know how big of a sale it is? Despite many items being priced at a quarter or less, they cleared $800 at the end of the first day! That’s a lot of quarters.

On the second day, everything that is left goes down to a quarter. I mean anything, a t.v., a table and chair set, whatever. I think this is brilliant. The point isn’t really to make a lot of money, the point is to get a little cash for stuff you wanted to get rid of anyway. Most of the stuff we put in the sale was stuff we had intended to donate to Good Will. Instead we got enough cash to cover our own purchases (~$4) plus cover pizza that night. Everything that was left we did end up donating. And it is fun to look through everybody else’s junk!

While we were at the rummage sale, Sara took Evie for a ride in a borrowed wagon. It’s not as funny to describe as to see, but Evie fell asleep about a block from home. As the wagon was pulled along, she swayed back and forth hard enough to smack her head on the cup holder a couple of times, but she must have been tired because she still didn’t wake up.

Just as a side note, Evie looooves shrimp! In addition to everything else she ate for supper, she ate 13 shrimp last night!
