Vow made, vow broken

I’ve been working on the same story for almost exactly 2 months now. It’s coming out pretty good, but I really need to get this finished. Yada, yada, same ole, same ole. I’m hoping some day I will have more of an update to put here besides, “whine whine, I don’t write enough.”

Because I have been working on the same story for so long, I vowed that I would finish it before returning from Seattle. Well guess what? It ain’t done. I did make a looooot of progress on it though, so I’m hoping to finish it shortly, at least by next week.

Here’s hoping!

Giant Carniverous Plants, newly discovered

Now check THIS out. It turns out that scientists have discovered a new type of pitcher plant in the Philippines that is big enough to eat rats!

I remember being fascinated by pitcher plants and Venus flytraps when I was little. I even had one of those little Venus flytraps you could buy at the drug store or whatever and I saw it eat several flies. It was absolutely terrifying and I’m sure I had nightmares about it, even as I couldn’t take my eyes away from it.

Obviously the idea that one of these things could eat something bigger (me, for example) is a concept that has probably been around as long as carnivorous plants have been around. But now there is actual proof that it is possible. And the thing that really makes it terrifying is that it was just discovered now, when I would have thought any such monstrosities would have long been discovered. If this thing was out there and we didn’t know about it, why not Bigfoot? Why not something even more terrifying?

Could this be far behind?

Garden Update

It has been a long time since I really gave an update on the garden (aside from the pickle canning of course). I guess the second year isn’t quite as exciting as the first year. In fact, the first time around we were snapping pictures of every new fruit or vegetable that poked it’s head out, but this year we don’t even bat an eye at massive, award winning, 20 pound zucchini. Actually though, the garden this year is head and shoulders above our garden from last year. There are a couple of big differences.

First off, we are doing a lot less weeding. I don’t know if it is because we got the garden sooner and thus were able to nip more weeds in the bud, if we were just smarter about our weeding, or if our garden is just laid out so well and so full, that the weeds are just crowded out. Or it could be that we just don’t care about having a weedy garden as much. Whatever the reason, this is saving us a lot of time and effort.

Second, our garden is planned out much better, in some cases because of the knowledge we gained last year. We are even rotating things out, for example, we had a huge crop of lettuce before it eventually made way for other things, since it is over quickly. We planted squash that is timed out such that the zucchini will be finished and ripped out in time to make room for the squash. We’re also working on our second crop of carrots.

The lettuce was out of control, we couldn’t give it away fast enough. Currently, we have more zucchini than we know what to do with. We’ve gotten tons of beans, most of which we’ve frozen. Now we are starting to enter tomato season.  So far only our cherry tomatoes have been taking off, but we have some types of tomatoes which are all ready at the same time, like Roma, so we will be expecting a tomato avalanche shortly. We also have at least 8 good sized green peppers waiting for us and we’ve even gotten a few hot peppers.

So, even though I haven’t been posting as much as last year about the garden, rest assured it is going (and growing!) strong.

And now Favre is a Viking

I thought this would have been the last time I had to make such an announcement.

After publicly declaring several times that he was retired, wanted to stay retired, and would in no way be joining specifically the Vikings, Favre surprised no one by signing with said Vikings.

Despite what many people would have you believe, I don’t much care about Favre signing where ever he wants. And if the Vikes want to have the drama that will be surrounding this whole thing, more power to them. In fact, that’s really the tragedy about this whole thing…my apathy. This was a guy who was a god, and now I hardly even care, other than to say, “Ha, good luck with that you idiots.” How the mighty have fallen.

Oh well, at least this will distract some of the media from the Michael Vick thing in Philly.

Quick, call Cthulu, we’re going for ice cream!

If you’re not doing anything this Saturday, why not check out the H.P. Lovecraft Memorial and Ice Cream Social. (Get it? Irony.) And the coolest part? It’s right in my neighborhood. Here are the particulars:

Start: 08/22/2009 2:00 pm

Location: 57th Street Books, 1301 E. 57th Street, Chicago, IL 60637

The stars are right for the return of the H.P. Lovecraft Memorial Ice Cream Social! Hear tales of unspeakable horror, see (and possibly win) forbidden tomes and strange artifacts, and partake of frozen confections colder than the howling void!

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend, but H.P. Lovecraft is one of my all time favorites and can’t be beat for sheer creepiness. So if you’re in the neighborhood, why not stop in and have some ice cream in celebration?
