Selling the Lie

It’s almost Christmas. Do you have all your shopping done? Not to worry.

The key to lying about buying someone a Christmas present is to really sell it. You can’t get away with “It’s in the mail” anymore. You need documentation.

Enter Selling the Lie.

For the low price of $5, they will create fake documentation to “prove” that you ordered a present.

Once you’ve given us all the info we need, and paid your $5, we send you a fake order form for whatever you ordered from a fake store. A few days later, we send out a second email, this time stating that the product’s been placed on back order. Finally, a few days after the holiday/gift-giving occasion has passed, we send out an order cancellation.

It doesn’t stop there. If you’re the type of person who tries to weasel out of giving presents, you might run into some suspicion with this tactic. They emails they send even contain a fake link to a website, and if someone goes to that site, it displays a message saying the website is down.

Isn’t the Internet great? I mean, it doesn’t enable you to lie. You were going to lie anyway. You could even have generated your own fake documentation. No, the Internet makes you lazier. Now you don’t even have to go through the effort. Pay the $5 and get on with your life.

Thank you, unnamed genius, for creating this business.

Awkward Pregnancy Photos

Pregnancy can be a little awkward. That is not what Awkward Pregnancy Photos is all about.

When you are pregnant, it’s not unusual to take pictures of your belly. We did it. I assume most people did it. So this is about people who take pregnancy pictures, but the pictures themselves are a little…off. A little strange. It’s not the pregnancy itself, they would be strange pictures regardless. But there seems to be something about the pregnancy picture specifically that brings out some very odd pictures.

For example:

Do you think that's her husband back there? Or a random guy? Either way, it doesn't bode well for their future relationship...

I have no words for this. What do you think she decided to have in the picture first, the watermelon or the gun?

Nothing says love like a tire

Merry Christmas!

The thing that was surprising to me was how many gun pictures there are! Even if you owned guns, and you frequently took pictures of yourself with your guns, isn’t the pregnancy picture an inappropriate place for this? Celebrating life not death? At the very least, you’re trying to look tough with your gun, but it’s hard to do that if you’re also trying to show off the fact that you’re a proud papa.

And you should never, ever send a sexy Christmas card. Especially not a sexy/pregnant Christmas card.

Anyway, go check out the site, the commentary on the pictures is hilarious!

Doored

Friday morning seemed like it was going to be great.

Most Fridays, after I drop Evie off at school I have a bunch of errands to do, especially now that we’re down to only one car. Grocery store, post office, what have you. But on this particular Friday, I had nothing to do. I was looking forward to a nice, relaxing morning with Oliver at home.

Fate, as it so often does, had other plans.

I was driving Southbound in two-way traffic on a busy street just a few blocks from the school, when one of the cars parked on the side of the street suddenly opened the driver’s side door. The door opened literally maybe 2 feet in front of me. I slammed on my brakes, but there was no chance at all to avoid it. ::boom:: Goodbye driver’s side door!

After I skid to a stop and I sat there for a minute thinking, “What the heck just happened?” I pulled over to the curb and ran back to see if the guy was okay. It happened so fast I really didn’t know if the guy was stepping out of the car when I hit the door, or if the door swung back and crushed him, or if a piece came off and impaled him to his seat, or what. He was fine and he was like, “How’s your car?” and that’s when I realized I hadn’t even looked at my car.

It wasn’t too bad. Cracked bumper, dented fender and I was missing my rear-view mirror on the passenger side. Certainly drivable. The same couldn’t be said for his car. The guy was actually really cool and we joked about things a little. His was a company car (he’s an exterminator), so he radioed back to base and they said they wanted to file a police report. However, the company was not local, so I called the police and we waited for someone to show up.

Oliver was due for a nap and he fell asleep in my arms pretty quickly, so he slept for the whole ordeal. I was really glad I didn’t have Evie with me. First off, that girl is built out of empathy. She would have wept and wept for our broken bumper. Second off, even though Oliver was heavy, it was a much more pleasant wait than it would have been answering question after question about what was happening and accidents in general.

When the police arrived, they informed us that they would not fill out the accident report because both of our cars were (technically) drivable, so we would need to go down to the station to fill out our report.

Guy: “How can I drive the car, I can’t shut my door?”
Cop: “Can’t you tie it shut or something?”
Guy: “Uh…I don’t have any rope with me.”

Ultimately though, his complaints fell on deaf ears, and the officer wouldn’t fill it out.  The other interesting thing I learned was that there is a law in Chicago that says anyone opening their door and causing an accident is always at fault. This makes sense of course, but it made me feel hopeful this would actually not be listed as my fault, which it totally wasn’t. At this point, I just don’t expect legal things to go my way, you know?

This leaves me with a conundrum though. The insurance company says they don’t care about getting an accident report. In fact, if the guy’s company hadn’t pressed for it, I wouldn’t have called the police at all. I certainly don’t want to drive to the police station and fill out an accident report and all that entails. However, in my experience with insurance companies, they will do whatever they can do to not have to pay for something, up to and including stabbing me in the face. So, when this inevitably happens, do I want to have to say, “No sir, I didn’t get an accident report.” I can’t control much about the process, but I’d hate to have to admit that I didn’t do everything in my limited power to ensure this goes my way.

One more funny thing I wanted to mention was the training of the insurance people. This lady deserved a SAG card! As I’m describing the accident, she was gasping and consoling like I just told her my family was wiped out in an act of genocide. I had a fender-bender, lady! Nobody was hurt!

Don’t think I’m complaining though! I loved it. Although I didn’t need to be consoled, I sure appreciated the effort. In this day and age, with the terrible customer service that we have, and they took the time to pretend to be interested? Well, there are a few companies around here that could take some notes.

Quote Monday Dreams a Little Dream

Sara: “I’m going to make a smoothie.”
Evie: “A chocolate smoothie!”
Sara: “No, I’m making banana.”
Evie: “But I’m dying for chocolate!”

Evie: “You can put on lotion AFTER I’m in bed. This is my commandment!” – Where did she even learn that word from? (And it wasn’t from school, that was my first thought too, but I asked her)

Evie’s been having a lot of “bad dreams” lately (the quotes represent the fact that I think a lot of them are an excuse to get me down there because she’s lonely). Her dreams can be kind of strange. Certainly I have had dreams that were scary at the time, and then silly when I woke up, but here are a few that stood out:

Evie: “A cow jumped over a fence and turned you and Oliver into cows! And then you ran away!”

Evie, practically in tears: “We were walking and the floor was covered with caterpillar puke!”

They’re not all bad though:

Evie: “Daddy, I had an exciting dream! Santa Claus had a baby! A baby boy! He wore a Santa hat!”

Shoot-a-brew

Alright, this is cool, I don’t care who you are.

A remote controlled cooler than launches cans to you.

I admit, it’s probably not as useful as the video makes it seem. I’m not yet so lazy that I can’t get up and walk over to the cooler (although the one where they’re launching it from the back of the boat into the water is kind of ingenious). And $295 is sort of pricey for a novelty item. However, nobody who saw one of these in action could fail to recognize its shear, unvarnished awesomeness.

Tell me you don’t want one?!
