Bea Arthur Wrassles Her Last Dinosaur

I’m sad to announce that Bea Arthur passed away today, at the age of 86. No more wrasslin dinosaurs for her. Bea, you’ll be forever golden in our eyes.

Hmm, that gives me an idea! We should start collecting donations to cast her body in sold gold! You can go ahead and send those donations to me.

Getting Recognized by the United Nations

Alright, talk about cool! A long time friend of mine received the Global Young Advocate Award from the United Nations! How awesome is that? Details below:

GLOBAL YOUNG ADVOCATE AWARD
Young people around the nation show their commitment to the goals and ideals of the United Nations on a daily basis. UNA-USA is proud to recognize young professionals whose accomplishments demonstrate personal initiative and commitment to the United Nations through the Global Young Advocate Award.

Past Global Young Advocate Awardees have been recognized because of their volunteer activities, workplace initiatives, and social endeavors. They have combined their passion for the United Nations with an ability to motivate others and create meaningful change.

On behalf of the 2009 UNA-USA Global Young Advocate Award Selection Committee, I am delighted to announce Anastasia Shown of the UNA Greater Philadelphia Chapter as the 2009 UNA Global Young Advocate.

Anastasia has lead efforts to reach out to marginalized immigrant communities in Philadelphia, partnered with Philadelphia public libraries and schools to spread awareness about the work of the United Nations, and facilitated exchange programs between educators in Philadelphia and Africa.

We are delighted to be able to honor Anastasia’s efforts, and indeed all of the efforts of the amazing nominees we received for this year’s award. This year’s field was the most competitive yet and we are sorry that we could not offer more than one award!

Congratulations Anastasia, that is so, so awesome!

In other announcements, Sara has the “skin of a nun”. And this from a dermatologist even! You’ll have to ask her about it, but just to be clear, the quote was in reference to Sara’s skin, not some kind of Silence of the Lambs nun-suit.

Hmm, I can’t end this post on that sentence. Anastasia, I apologize for adding a nun-suit reference to your nice announcement! But, on the bright side, anybody googling “nun skin” will now find this announcement!

There have been a lot of milestones on the blog here recently, including my 5 year birthday and my 500th post.  Well, now we can add another milestone, my 500th comment, courtesy of my brother! The comment was actually a pingback from a post on his blog (which has supposedly resumed operation)

“LeVar was on The Soup not “Talk Soup”!(great TV show btw) which caused Big Brother to post about it. He says pretty much I could want to say here.  https://erith1.wordpress.com/2009/01/19/levar-burton/”

Sara had the idea to see who had the most comments overall, but that was trickier than I expected.  Back in the LiveJournal days, if you didn’t have an account you had to post anonymously and then (hopefully) leave your name in the post (although many people forgot). Also, it is amazing how many different ways people will write their name, for example you might have Jackie, Jackie Parker, InteractiveReader, Interactive Reader, etc. So I’m sure I missed counting some of the comments. And, of course, some of you have been with me longer than others.

So, without further ado, the rankings are as follows:

  1. Myself – 87 comments
  2. Jackie – 85 comments (but I bet she has more than 87 because I’m pretty sure I missed counting some)
  3. Jen – 37 comments
  4. Meg – 32 comments
  5. Anna – 31 comments

Notice that most of the top commenters have blogs or webpages to link to, except Anna…time for someone to get a blog…

If you’re wondering where Sara came in, it was very near the bottom at 6.  That was actually more than she thought she had. I guess she can comment to me more directly if she feels the need.

So anyway, thanks everybody for your attention over the years, but thanks especially to the 500 times you bothered to actually comment! Even after all this time I still get excited when I see I have a new comment and I rush to read it first thing in the morning.

Now, if only there was a way to get the total word count that I’ve published so far…

Happy Birthday to my Blog!

Today my blog officially turns 5!  Happy birthday blog!  Well technically I took about a year off from Aug. 2004 to Aug. 2005, so maybe it only counts as 4 years.

Anyway, reminisce with the post that started it all…

Papa John’s Countdown

Hey everybody!

Papa Johns has a thing going where if the opening kickoff of the Superbowl is returned for a touchdown, you can get a pizza for a quarter.  The catch is you have to sign up here before the game.

Sure this is unlikely to happen and sure they are going to take your email address and send you crap, but are you telling me you don’t have an email address you use to sign up for this kind of stuff?

Well fine, don’t do it then, but I just thought I’d let you know as a reward for being such a loyal reader.
