So it occurs to me that my blog has been rather serious as of late. Time to rectify that.
First up is this awesome video. Find out what happens when the storm sewers get too backed up:
P.S. The embedding isn’t seeming to work, so you can also see it here
When the guy was getting out of the truck I was like, “What if that sucker blows again!!”
Alright, next check out this optical illusion. Look at the picture below, and then back up a few feet from the monitor. The faces switch sides!

I actually did this a couple of times and it’s pretty cool. I was at work at the time, but nobody mentioned the fact that I kept walking away from my computer and coming back and walking away again.
Next up, interesting items from McDonalds menus around the world, part I, II, and III. I haven’t actually been able to see part III yet…their web hosting seems to be down a lot. You might need to check back a few times. Sara and I have had some of our own international McDonald’s menu finds over the years. At the train station in Rome I was introduced to the “McPink” which was some sort of a ham sandwich. In London we had the mini-doughnuts (referenced in the articles) and also we had a “Cadbury Egg McFlurry.” It was pretty tasty as I remember.
This next link isn’t funny so much as a good reference link to save, although it could be a good time waster. Come on down to the Napkin Folding Guide, featuring such specialties as the Sail, Bird of Paradise and Fleur-di-lis. I didn’t try any of these, but the instructions look easy enough that I feel confident I could do it.
Finally, I leave you with some homework courtesy my mother-in-law. Go to Google Maps and map some directions from here to somewhere in Europe (i.e. from Chicago, IL to London, England). They’ll get you there, but they might be a little tough to follow!
China was a trove of interesting McDonald’s treats. The main thing I remember was the Quarter Pounder with cucumbers and spicy sauce. They also had a strange pie selection. No apple. Instead they had taro root, pineapple (yum!), and green bean! We never worked up the courage to try the last one! And like all McD’s, they had seasonal/temporary items as well. I remember getting really excited about some hot beverage that looked vaguely like apple cider but proved to be kind of boring.
I was surprised by how much stuff they had in Italy, though. We tried the mini calzones, which were soggy and a little cool in the middle (I guess they didn’t heat them long enough after taking them out of the freezer), as well as the fried shrimp. It was… fried shrimp. But it was a weird thing to have at McDonald’s! The menu also had a special promotion – touring the US by sandwich. I saw ads for the Las Vegas themed sandwich and one other. I think it was for somewhere in California, and it had ham on it.
I’ve been to McDonald’s once here in Norway. I had fries. I didn’t notice anything unusual on the menu… …other than the typical Norwegian restaurant staple: above-average prices! Yeah, we can’t really afford to eat out even at McDonald’s!
