Who needs a phone charger?

Now this is some cool technology! Basically, Nokia has come up with a way to harvest ambient radio waves and turn it into electricity to charge the battery of your phone. In other words, your cell phone could slowly recharge in your pocket and could essentially stay in standby mode forever, without ever needing to be recharged. Think of all the energy that is roaming around us via cell phone towers, power lines, radio transmissions, etc. that is going to waste. Tapping into and using that otherwise wasted power is like finding another natural resource. That’s thinking green!

Going a completely different direction now, I came across this humorous article about people who start Twitter accounts, post just one message, and quit. That article led to this blog about “1 post wonders“, that is, people who make blogs with only 1 post, never to post again.

Hopefully reading a few of those blogs will help you appreciate my blog a little more. 😉

There have been a lot of milestones on the blog here recently, including my 5 year birthday and my 500th post.  Well, now we can add another milestone, my 500th comment, courtesy of my brother! The comment was actually a pingback from a post on his blog (which has supposedly resumed operation)

“LeVar was on The Soup not “Talk Soup”!(great TV show btw) which caused Big Brother to post about it. He says pretty much I could want to say here.  https://erith1.wordpress.com/2009/01/19/levar-burton/”

Sara had the idea to see who had the most comments overall, but that was trickier than I expected.  Back in the LiveJournal days, if you didn’t have an account you had to post anonymously and then (hopefully) leave your name in the post (although many people forgot). Also, it is amazing how many different ways people will write their name, for example you might have Jackie, Jackie Parker, InteractiveReader, Interactive Reader, etc. So I’m sure I missed counting some of the comments. And, of course, some of you have been with me longer than others.

So, without further ado, the rankings are as follows:

  1. Myself – 87 comments
  2. Jackie – 85 comments (but I bet she has more than 87 because I’m pretty sure I missed counting some)
  3. Jen – 37 comments
  4. Meg – 32 comments
  5. Anna – 31 comments

Notice that most of the top commenters have blogs or webpages to link to, except Anna…time for someone to get a blog…

If you’re wondering where Sara came in, it was very near the bottom at 6.  That was actually more than she thought she had. I guess she can comment to me more directly if she feels the need.

So anyway, thanks everybody for your attention over the years, but thanks especially to the 500 times you bothered to actually comment! Even after all this time I still get excited when I see I have a new comment and I rush to read it first thing in the morning.

Now, if only there was a way to get the total word count that I’ve published so far…

Happy Birthday to my Blog!

Today my blog officially turns 5!  Happy birthday blog!  Well technically I took about a year off from Aug. 2004 to Aug. 2005, so maybe it only counts as 4 years.

Anyway, reminisce with the post that started it all…

500th Post!

My 500th post!  Who’d have thought when I started this thing I would ever reach such a milestone? Actually, when I think about it, it seems like I should have a lot more than 500…

Baconpalooza

After an off-handed remark* by my brother that he should make a blog, I’ve been pestering him mercilessly to do so.  I don’t know that I’ve told so many stories of him on here, but he has plenty to tell.  There’s the mall fountain incident, the heated-swimming-pool-in-the-apartment incident, all of the school pictures (Dr. Evil, Spiderman Suspenders), the “I smell” school ID, and many more stories that could probably be described as “incidents” that I don’t even know about.

*All of his remarks are off-handed…he’s a lefty

So anyway, now that he has his blog finally up and running, maybe he can share some of these stories with you.  I must say, as a man devoted to bacon (9 posts now, counting this one), I did not center my entire blog around it.  I also must say, as a man devoted to fighting zombies, I did not devote an entire page to my apocalypse survival plan.  (In fact, though I’ve given it much thought, I haven’t come up with a current working plan since I moved from Philly; my current condo being much less defensible and no Tony Vegas to be my own personal Andy.)

I just hope he realizes what an honor it is to have a link from my blog.  The fact is, blogging is hard work.  Blogs have even been described as the Vampires of the Internet for their ability to suck the time (and life!) out of you.  I have known many people who have tried to start a blog only to quickly lose interest.  Therefore, there is little sense in linking to a blog until you are sure they mean it.  So I am giving him the benefit of the doubt here, but I’m sure you all will go over and convince him to keep it up.

P.S.  Friday is Oprah’s favorite things episode and you might want to watch it…I heard a rumor that one of our favorite people might make a guest appearance…
