Free Fiction by me – The Wizard of 63rd Street on Podcastle

I am very pleased to announce my story, “The Wizard of 63rd Street” is now available on the audio-fiction magazine, Podcastle.

This story is intensely personal to me, and I poured a lot more of myself into this one than I usually do. This is the story I was writing so hard that I missed my train stop (at 63rd of course) and went all the way to 115th.

From the show notes:

This story is set in my neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, where gang signs and gun violence are a part of life. The people and streets in this story are, unfortunately, very vivid to me. I wish there were real life wizards who could paint a mural and make the problems go away. Barring that, I wish there were easy solutions that could unravel the thorny knot of generations of systematic discrimination and poverty, education and politics.

In the end, though, I went with an optimistic ending, even though it’s hard sometimes to feel optimistic. I don’t have wizard powers like Russell, but if my writing has any power at all to influence the universe, I would like to use it for the people trapped in tough circumstances who don’t have the privilege to escape like I do.

A New Look

Fiddling with the look of the website today. It has been a long time since I’ve freshened it up! I don’t believe in the thirteen or so years that I’ve been running this thing that I’ve ever gone with a light theme. What do you know, I kind of like it!

I think I basically have it how I want it (mostly just cleaner, dare I say, more professional?), but don’t be surprised if you notice some additional changes in the days to come.

Free Fiction by me: “The Story of Daro and the Arbolita” on StarShipSofa

Hey look, a new story by me!

This story previously appeared in Analog, which is not freely available, so I am especially happy that it is now available for anybody who didn’t grab a physical copy at the time!

For those of you not familiar with StarShipSofa, here is my write up from way back in 2011:

This podcast can only be described as adorable. It is so clearly by the people, for the people and the host is such a nice guy, that you can’t help but love it. However, I would definitely not recommend this for everyone. It’s a lot more than just audio fiction. Although they do include at least one story in every episode, it’s more like one feature among many, instead of the main event. The very, very long episodes contain author interviews, genre news, genre history, upcoming book releases, etc. If you’re really into science fiction in general, then there is a lot to offer here.

On this particular episode it starts off with my story straight away, but I do highly recommend you stick around and listen to the fascinating “science news” segment.

Unidentified Funny Objects 5 out today!

The Unidentified Funny Objects anthology is now out, including my story “The Lesser of Two Evils”!

I tell you, it never gets old holding a book in your hand with your words in it.

The fifth annual volume of the Unidentified Funny Objects anthology series features eighteen lighthearted science fiction and fantasy tales from the masters of the genre. Read about planetary adoptions, secret agent princesses, alien cooking reality shows, rigged elections, magical insurance agents, and much more.

That’s right, one of the “masters of the genre”, right here:

Giving Myself Permission

Hey, ya’ll. You may have noticed a bit of a drop-off in posting here lately. Truth be told, I am having a bit of trouble staying on top of this. Turns out that babies are kind of a lot of work! Who knew? I find that when I do have time to work on things, my creative brain is just absolutely fried. So, apologies for the scarcity of posts, but also a heads up that this is likely to continue for the near future.

I’m giving myself permission for a mental health break, so I don’t have to feel guilty when I go for days without writing or blogging.

Thanks
