Shape of: “My Heart is a Quadratic Equation”, Form of: Live Theater

I have some very exciting news to announce! Matt Haynes from The Pulp Stage has adapted my story “My Heart is a Quadratic Equation” for the theater.

Matt emailed me out of the blue after hearing my story on Escape Pod. I probably would have just figured Matt was a Nigerian prince or something (I mean, come on. “We want to adapt your story for theater. Just send along your credit card information to cover the costs…”, right?), except he had just done a guest narration over on Toasted Cake, so I had actually heard of him just before he contacted me.

I can’t tell you how thrilled I am about this whole thing. So I’ve been published online, via email, in print, in audio, and now I can add live action to the list. It’s been a whirlwind to say the least.

I’m not sure about when they will actually be performing the play, but of course I will keep you posted. Unfortunately, the company is in Portland, which is a little far for me to go and see it. Not sure if I have any Portlandian readers, but if anybody is out that way, please go and report back! I’d love to hear how it went!

OOMPH: Released Today!

I’m very pleased to announce that OOMPH: A Little Super Goes a Long Way is officially on sale today, including my story “Random Play All and the League of Awesome”.

I can not overstate how much I love trivial superpowers. As anyone who knew me growing up could tell you, I’ve always loved super heroes. From dressing up as one as a kid (or, er, as an adult), to collecting comic books, to apparel, movies, and video games, to the absolutely embarrassing number of times I’ve listened to Dr. Horrible.

But I never liked the idea of guys like Superman or Thor. I don’t want an unstoppable goody-two shoes. Show me a guy who doesn’t have it so easy. Show me a guy with just a *little* bit of power, and the wit and courage to use that little bit at just the right moment to make a *huge* difference.

Well, I will show you. I’ll show you a whole book of stories like that.

OOMPH is available in paperback, as well as for the Kindle or Nook.

Please Standby

Hello all,

I’ve been busy preparing and traveling for a business meeting, so I haven’t had time to work on the blog lately. For the foreseeable future I will be concentrating on recuperating all the sleep I haven’t been getting. So blog updates will probably be sparse (or non-existent) for the rest of the week.

Please try to do what you can to continue on.

In the meantime, feel free to use the comment thread for anything you’d like to discuss.

As you were.

Happy Birthday!

Today is Sara’s birthday.

It’s kind of funny when you have kids, because birthdays are such a big deal to them and involve a lot of hoopla, but when you get to your own birthday it’s just sort of “meh”. You still have to go to work, or watch the kids, or cook, or do laundry, or whatever. It’s basically a regular day, except for the 10 minutes or so when you open a present or eat cake. I think it’s basically the same for people who don’t have kids (after all, it’s just a birthday — everybody has them!), but they don’t have the contrast of just completing a full-featured kids birthday party.

So even though perhaps today wasn’t much of a special day, I think birthdays are still a good time to reflect on your life. Since it’s not my birthday I will try to leave the reflection to her and refrain from putting words in her mouth. But I will say that every year she seems to get better in every way: wiser, more attractive, more confident, fitter, happier. I don’t know where exactly she expected to be at this point in her life, but speaking for myself, I really never imagined life would be so good by now. Hopefully she feels the same. On the other hand, I’m married to her, and she’s married to me, so, you know, her opinion may differ.

In any case, happy birthday babe. May you enjoy the best present possible: the kids start school in less than 2 weeks.

Evie planned out pretty much every aspect of the day, up to and including picking out which colors of candles she wanted and how they should be arranged. She selected pancakes for breakfast, popcorn for lunch, and (her favorite) saffron zucchini couscous for supper. Finally, we will end the day with a “movie night”; Evie has selected Annie, which she has been dying to see for a long time.

Happy birthday to my always colorful girl!
