She probably only said that because I made her eggs for a snack and then we baked banana bread.
I’ve been on quite a baking tear lately. Evie loves to do it, measuring, dumping, mixing, and it’s something that can pretty easily eat up a big chunk of our day (in a good way). And the best part is, you actually have something to show from it! Something delicious.
So, after our excellent trial of making some Halloween cookies, Evie and I took it to another level. We started by making banana bread on Friday. Then, on Sunday, we made waffles in the morning, followed by oatmeal raisin cookies. Finally, I took on my most ambitious project yet, making homemade spinach/chicken/bacon calzones from scratch (meaning using the bread maker for the crust).
The calzones were a lot more work than I was expecting, perhaps cooling my ardor for baking a little bit. They turned out good (despite Sara’s efforts to sabotage my recipe), but I’m not sure it was worth the effort. Still, I think I will try to think of baking as a fun activity to do, like going to the park, or doing a craft project. My mom is an excellent baker, and when I was growing up, I remember that we almost always had some sort of baked desert lying around somewhere. That is something I remember fondly from my childhood.
Finally, since we were talking about my waffles and all, Sara and I were having a little debate. Obviously, we will settle this like adults, with a web poll. The results of this poll are final, and cannot be questioned in any way.
I responded “Of course!” to your quiz, but I must say that more so than syrup, every square must have atleast a tiny dab of butter.

I don’t pour ANY syrup on my waffles. I instead utilize the “dunk method”. So I half-way agree with you on the every square bit since dunking each bite in syrup I believe would give you the same syrup intake. I haven’t verified this scientifically.

I put syrup in both sides of squares.

What about none of the above? I settled for “of course,” but, truthfully I love deliciousness, especially on my waffles, but I don’t feel like I have to fill up every square to get it. Although, once the waffles/pancakes soak up the syrup, I do tend to add more.

Syrup?! You crazy American. Brown cheese! Now that’s what you put on a waffle!
*kidding* Lucas can eat his brown cheese waffle like a real Norwegian, but I’ll pass. 😛

And my reply somehow ended up nested. Oops.

Continuing to enjoy your completely unbiased surveys. And it should be mentioned that I do think it should go in every square–but not overflowing from every square like some people in our house! I had Evie dip–she likes dipping things, plus the syrup doesn’t disappear so she isn’t continually asking for more.

Just admit you are an enemy to deliciousness…

I totally agree – each square needs to be covered with syrup, but not so there is a pool from bottom to top in each one.

For the record, I didn’t put *that* much syrup on. Some of the squares in the middle were overflowing, but that was to average out the ones on the side that didn’t have much in them!

Er…I mean, whomever the fictitious person is who takes that side of this unbiased poll!

By the way, congratulations on your second comment…your other comment was in July of ’08. You’re not quite averaging 1 per year!

Butter is way more important than syrup, and if you waste too much time, the waffles are cold anyway and then I wouldn’t eat them at all.

Syrup or jam, every hole must be filled. The waffle is only a carrier for the sugar delivery.

It should be noted that while I voted “of course”, I don’t ususally put syrup on my waffles at all but prefer bananas (or some other fruit) and whipped cream. Being the obsessive person that I am, I would have to fill in each square with butter or syrup or whatever. (Honestly, I’m still beaming over the “my mom is an excellent baker” comment. I ran to tell Ron, but he was asleep!)
