After helping mommy make chili the other day, Evie has learned about spices. If you hold one up she will guess “garlic”, “chili powder”, or (my personal favorite) “cumin”.

I ♥ Cumin. In our Tex-Mex/Indian fusion kitchen, it’s indispensable. But I think Evie and I have something in common. When I pick up our bottle of cumin, I start guessing the name as well. FYI, the answer is “jeera.” When our friend Puneet used to come cook with me, she’d always name the spices in Hindi (even though she knows them in English, and she knows I don’t speak Hindi). So I had to learn some of the Hindi names so I’d know what she was talking about. When I relabeled the bottles, I actually put some of the names (including cumin) in both languages.
