Chromed

Just released: Google’s new webbrowser, Google Chrome.  I installed it 6 minutes after it went live, in fact, I am blogging from it right now.  You can learn more about it in comic form, arguably the best way to learn anything.  (Remind me to tell you about the Cartoon History of the Universe sometime…fantastic!)

So far so good.  Fonts and things are kind of looking funny.  It will take some getting used to with the tabs on the top, but I think it makes sense.  It imported everything from IE seemlessly.  There are a lot of speed and security enhancements, which are hard to quantify.  Best feature so far is the “new tab” page.  Rather than making a blank page when you go to a new tab, it displays a page that is customized to your personal browsing history.  Your most visited pages are there with one click access.  And somehow that new tab seems to load faster than the blank page in IE!

So, first impression is good.  It seems faster than IE and Firefox, but maybe that’s because I haven’t loaded it down with plugins, etc. yet.

  1. You beat me to the blogging punch! I too just downloaded Chrome this week and, while I really like the accessible bookmarks (perfect for the 27 times a day I log into Facebook), and the “new tab” page, I have noticed a few issues that, granted, won’t affect everyone. First of all, if you use hotmail as your email service, you’ll be annoyed every time you log in as the Microsoft-based website doesn’t yet recognize Chrome and asks you to update your outdated browsing capabilities. Secondly, I have noticed that some links in Facebook are for whatever reason rendered inoperable with this browser. To make sure it wasn’t a problem with the website, I opened IE and tried the same links – worked without issue. Also had to load some plugins to make several websites load properly. So all in all, it’s taking some getting used to, but I think Google is really on to something here!

  2. Well, to be fair, they are billing it as a “beta version” meaning it is not an official release yet. Also, to be fair, I’m sure you had to load the same plugins with IE to get those websites to load, but you did it so long ago that you don’t remember!

That being said, we have run into a few websites we need for work (for example a VPN website) that we can’t use in Chrome.
